Fructo oligosaccharides (FOS) are short chain fructans (oligosaccharides) present in several different species of plants where they perform the function of an energy reserve. They represent a major source of dietary fiber which is very important to both humans and animals. Fructo oligosaccharides belong to the group of prebiotics, biological molecules that, among other things, allow bifidobacterium to develop within the intestine. Because of that, along with the fact that they’re resistant to the digestive processes, Fructo oligosaccharides help keep intestinal bacterial flora balanced.
