Great Yellow Gentian (Gentiana lutea L.) is a perennial herbaceous plant that belongs to the Gentianaceae family. Its dimensions are bigger than those of other species in the genus Gentiana. It’s a rare plant that lives in mountainous areas, slightly damp meadows and pastures, and on calcareous soils. It can be found in the Alps in Italy where it’s illegal to uproot it because it’s a protected plant. It’s medicinal and has been cultivated since the Middle Ages and used in some liqueurs and bitters. Gentian roots are used in herbal medicine because they promote digestive and liver function and eliminate intestinal gas.
