Burdock (Arctium lappa L.) is an herbaceous plant, erect and biennial, that belongs to the Asteraceae family.
Its Latin name is likely of ancient origin: "Arctium" which in Greek means bear, probably refers to the hairy and shaggy appearance of the plant. The species name may come from the Greek word: "Labein" (sticking), refers to the fact that the fruit attaches to clothing and animal fur. The plant has been known since ancient times. There are also records with an ancient date that show that it was cultivated as a vegetable and as a medicinal plant. Burdock contains lappina, inulin, tannic acid and mucilaginous substances and is considered one of the most important purifying plants, not only in our tradition, but also in Chinese medicine as well. It detoxes the body and drains excess body fluids.
