Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA) is naturally occurring antioxidant found mostly in red meat and organ meat, but it can also be found in some vegetables, such as potatoes, broccoli and spinach. Acid-Alpha-Lipoic is a cofactor of vital importance to human body cells.

Its antioxidant properties are due to the presence of a disulfide bond (two sulfur atoms) in its molecules.

It acts as a cofactor for numerous enzymes that participate in the process of converting glucose, fatty acids and other energy sources into adenosine triphosphate (ATP). Its role in the body has been noted to be in relation to insulin, antioxidant, and glycogen synthesis activities and other important functions.
