Blood orange

Orange is a fruit that comes from Citrus sinensis trees, fruit trees that belong to the genus Citrus (Rutaceae family).
They're native to China and Japan but were later imported to Europe by the Arabs and by the Genoese merchants. They spread throughout Italy probably around the fourteenth century, especially in Sicily, where today there are many varieties that grow there, including blood oranges. Blood oranges are different from yellow oranges because of their pulp color, which varies from dark orange to bright red. The three most popular types of oranges are Tarot, Moro and Sanguinello.
They all owe their color pigment to anthocyanins, substances that show marked antioxidant properties.
