Bitter Orange

Bitter orange (Citrus aurantium L.) is a plant that belongs to the Rutaceae family. It differs from Citrus sinensis it that it has very long thorns, leaves that are attached differently, a darker leaf color, petioles that are winged, a more intense leaf and flower aroma, a rougher and more colorful fruit peel, and above all, a bitter tasting pulp. Its fruits are smaller than sweet oranges and are not often eaten because of their strong, pungent flavor. They’re used in weight-loss products because they stimulate the beta-adrenergic receptors of the brown adipose and cause that tissue’s metabolism to increase which reduces adipose deposits (this is known as lipolysis - in other words, they burn fat). Furthermore, bitter orange is used in phytotheraphy because it is a great digestive aid, eliminates intestinal gas and has calming, toning and antiseptic properties.
